About Janet Chester Bly
Janet Chester Bly is an award-winning author, speaker, writing mentor, and the steward of Bly Books, preserving the literary legacy she built alongside her late husband, western novelist Stephen Bly.
A self-described “city girl with a country heart,” Janet followed Stephen to the small mountain community of Winchester, Idaho, where together they wrote books, raised a family, served in ministry, and embraced life in the rural Northwest. After Stephen’s passing in 2011, Janet remained in Winchester for another decade, continuing the work they began together while surrounded by the people and places that inspired so much of their writing.
Janet has authored more than a dozen nonfiction and fiction books of her own and co-authored a couple dozen others with Stephen. Her writing spans inspirational nonfiction, family life, devotionals, western/cowgirl lit fiction, cozy mysteries, and stories for young readers.

Janet’s novel, Beneath a Camperdown Elm, received 2020 First Place honors for Best Western Novel from AWSA Advanced Writers & Speakers Association.
A Family Writing Adventure
One of Janet’s most meaningful projects came after Stephen’s death. Together with her three sons—Russell, Michael, and Aaron—she completed Stephen’s unfinished western novel, Stuart Brannon’s Final Shot. The family faced an unusual challenge: Could a committee write fiction?
With a four month deadline and a deep love for Stephen and his work, they set out to finish the story he began. The result became both a published novel and a cherished family memory that continues to inspire readers today.
Encouraging Readers and Writers
Janet holds a degree in Literature, Languages, and Fine & Performing Arts from Lewis-Clark State College. Through the years, she spoke at conferences, retreats, women’s events, and writing workshops. She has mentored numerous aspiring writers and served as manuscript critique consultant for various authors. Her experience includes judging writing contests for organizations such as Writer’s Digest, American Christian Fiction Writers, and other pro writing groups. Janet enjoys helping writers discover their voice while honing their gifts for publication.
Life Beyond the Books
Today, Janet enjoys an active life centered on faith, family, friendship, and community. She now lives closer to her sons and grandchildren, where she has embraced a season of serving opportunities, community activities, and nurturing meaningful relationships. She directs much of her creative energy toward preserving family stories and memories for future generations.
A fascinating bit of family history: Janet was born on the very day the famous flag raising at Iwo Jima took place during World War II, while her father was serving overseas in Europe.
