Excerpt from A Dawning Light, Chinese Christian testimony by Samantha Yau:

Professor Webster took great pains to expound Noam Chomsky’s transformational grammar to us. His handwriting saturated the three-meter-wide whiteboard hung at the front of the lecture theatre. Syntax trees of different sentence structures. From simple to complex. From noun phrase to prepositional phrase. He went through each transparency on the overhead projector in great length. A total of twenty. One after another. Unfastening the collar button, he paused for a breath. Beads of perspiration glistened on his brows.

My classmates were glued to the front rows of the auditorium. Chomsky’s linguistics theory had captivated them. Some hurried to jot down notes in the margin of their books. Others raised their hands to ask searching questions. All moved their eyes as Professor Webster direcfted his laser pointer to the tree diagrams. What classroom momentum.

I looked on with a shrug of indifference. The American linguistics expert failed to appeal to me. His principles were no exception. I needed no theory to autopsy my heavy heart. I felt it. I carried it. And I had to endure it. My shoulders stiffened in anxiety and my hands sweated bullets. The excruciating pain in my head was ready to explode. I fell to pieces.

Who cares about the word order of a sentence when you cannot even order your thoughts? My heart ached for Dad.
