Frontier novel for kids: Dangerous Ride Across Humboldt Flats by Stephen Bly, Adventures on the American Frontier Series, for 9-14 yr olds

In this frontier novel, 14-year-old orphan Gabriel Young barely survives in the unforgiving West. He works for meals at mining camps and frontier towns. Then in 1860 he gets lost along the Humboldt River in northern Nevada Territory. He meets a girl who takes him to her parents at a Pony Express station. Gabe finds a whole lot more than shelter and a meal. He discovers a father’s provision. A mother’s love. And a young girl’s interest.

Gabriel can hardly believe the family’s tender care for him. When he gets a chance to help his newfound family, he rides several legs of the dangerous Pony Express trail. He delivers news of Abraham Lincoln’s election and the impending Civil War. In addition, Gabe learns the power of prayer and love in this historical adventure story.

“Gabriel, I’m Mrs. Lovelock. Dinner will be ready shortly, and we insist you eat with us.”

“You!” the bearded freighter shouted. “What are you doin’ here?”

“Poker Bob?” Gabriel stammered.

The heavyset teamster reached into the wagon and yanked out a shotgun. “I told you I’d shoot you if I ever saw you again.”

Gabriel leaped into the saddle as he heard the explosion of black powder and shot. He kicked the horse’s flanks, and Big Boy galloped south. Glancing back over his shoulder, he could see Mr. Lovelock wrestle the gun from the bearded man. One hundred yards west of the corrals he slowed the horse down. “Big Boy, I reckon we won’t have any supper after all.”
