Prairie Bob Trucking His Hog Back
I sat with an insurance salesman at the local coffee shop when Prairie Bob came in, covered from hat to boot in oil and grease. “Ain’t got time to eat dinner,” Prairie Bob reported. “I bought that truck on Saturday and didn’t even make it home. Nossir, I ain’t keepin’ that truck. I’m going to town right now and get my hog back.”
Prairie Bob banged his way out the door and the insurance man stared at me a moment. “You mean that old boy traded some hogs for a truck?” he asked.
Another Cowboy Saying
I explained that getting your hog back is a cowboy expression for recovering something that has been taken from you. Usually it has a connotation of being stolen. I figured Prairie Bob thought his hard-earned money had been purloined by some slick talking truck salesman.
A Thief Among Us
Now, it seems to me all of us has something mighty valuable stolen from us. I don’t mean your pocketbook, pickup, or favorite cow dog. According to the Bible, one of the devil’s main purposes here on earth is to steal, kill, and destroy. And I want to tell you he’s mighty good at what he does. He’ll try to steal your honesty and reputation, kill your success and family’s affection, as well as destroy your bank account. But most of all, he stole your relationship with God.
Paul exhorted folks, saying, “We implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20).
Get Your Heavenly Hog Back
We know we ought to have a relationship with God. And if we don’t have it, we feel like something’s missing. That’s the empty feeling in your gut when you stand at the grave of a loved one and realize your turn’s coming.
Through Jesus Christ each one of us can have a personal relationship with God. It’s ours. Jesus bought it for us with His very life. It’s sort of like the devil stole it away from us. Maybe it’s about time for some of you to go and get your heavenly hog back.
