Girl Mirror ReflectionUnchangeable Truth In A Mirror Reflection

My 9-year-old son, Aaron, enjoyed playing with my recording equipment. He sat in front of the mic and made an assortment of noises. Every once in a while, he uttered a few words. Then I convinced him to read a few passages from the Bible. I taped it and played it back to him.

“That’s not me,” he insisted. “I don’t sound that way. That sounds really weird.”

Most of us have a distorted view of our unchangeable traits. Our voice to us seems deeper, more sincere, brimming with knowledge and incredible intelligence. Then, we hear the truth. We sound more like some scatter-brained wimp. But it’s good to hear our own voice. We gain a more honest view of ourselves.

Wonderful Tell-Tale Inventions

Mirrors and scales and video cameras reveal truth. You might consider yourself a gorgeous, young blonde. Or a muscular, tanned hunk. But with a peek in the mirror each morning, reality sets in. Kids need to learn these lessons too. Only with an accurate picture will they begin to understand their own uniqueness. Then they’re ready to learn how God created them exactly how He wanted them to be.

Paul warns in Romans 12:3, “Don’t think more highly of yourself than you ought to think.” That goes beyond the unchangeable of how you sound and look. We can study our inner life as well, at the mirror that reflects our spiritual image. Careful, daily consideration of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ remind us all too well of who we are. The more intensely we view his perfection, the more vivid our own weakness.

The Unchangeable Good News

We’re not doomed to remain the same in our spiritual life. We may not be able to change our height or freckles or most any other part of our physical body. But we can allow the Lord to change our hearts and minds and spirits. In the most important areas of life, we aren’t stuck with the same old reflection.

Kids who learn to accept early the unchangeable and to perfect the changeable have a 10-mile head start in finding true satisfaction.
